Right now most of you are concerned with how to make our homes more efficient this winter, and most are focused on the furnace. That’s important, but don’t forget your water heater. These appliances rank second or third in energy use, and they operate year round, so a little efficiency goes a long way.

In the last few years, gas fired tankless water heaters have become very popular because they heat water on demand and use much less energy than traditional models.

But if you rely on electricity for this chore, you also have a more efficient option, too—the hybrid, or heat pump water heater. It draws heat from the air around it, and it transfers it to the water in the tank, which requires much less energy than relying solely on electric heating elements.
