KBIS: Kitchen and Bath Industry Show 2009
By: Danny Lipford
The annual Kitchen/Bath Industry Show is the largest international trade show for kitchen and bath products in the world.
Here are some of the cool, innovative items that Danny and Jodi discovered at this year’s show.
Wood countertops from Grothouse Lumber Company are available in a wide variety of colors, patterns, and shapes.
Solid surface countertops, such as those from Corian and Samsung, come in a wide range of colors and patterns that mimic the look of natural stone in a seamless, stain resistant material.
The latest product from Thomas’ Kitchen Art is Giani granite paint, a faux painting kit that can be used to make almost any surface—including plastic laminate countertops—look like granite.
Grothouse Lumber Company also had beautiful wood sinks on display that are finished with Durata, a highly water resistant and extremely durable finish.
Another durable option for sinks are ones made from Silgranit II from Blanco. Composed of 80% natural granite mixed with acrylic resin, Silgranit resists chipping, scratching, staining, and burning.
Cabinets and Hardware
New storage solutions from Rev-A-Shelf include a revolving shoe rack, blind corner cabinet pull out, and an under sink caddy that holds all your cleaning supplies.
To keep your counters clean, there’s the DrawerVac which mounts directly under your kitchen cabinets and attaches to the central vacuum system or a stand alone unit. Simply open the drawer to activate, brush in crumbs, and watch them disappear.
The thin profile, energy efficient, LED under cabinet lighting from Kichler Lighting stood out from the crowd and is the first of its kind to be granted an Energy Star rating.
Natural stone knobs from Sea Stones give cabinets a unique look. The stones are gathered from beaches and riverbanks where they have been gently rounded by the water.
A myriad of styles and designs in cabinet hardware were also on display from Atlas Homewares, ranging from subtle and subdued to bright and flashy.
Treat your aching feet to a GelPro kitchen floor mat from Häfele. It’s available in a wide selection of colors and patterns in sizes up to 3’ wide by 12’ long.
The Smart Touch electronic controls on Jenn-Air built-in ovens walk you step-by-step through the entire cooking process and even help you choose the right pan!
If you’re interested in saving energy, check out the solar and tankless water heaters from Rheem and GE, as well as more energy efficient versions of their traditional tank models.
Showers and Tubs
The hot pink Optik Post-Minimalist bathtub from Maax was a real attention grabber at the show.
Also of interest were translucent tubs and sinks in the Luminist collection from Toto that come with built-in lighting.
If you’re in the market for a steel enameled tub, check out those by Kaldewei which are twice as thick as most models and guaranteed for 30 years. Their Luxxo Duo Oval design comes in white, black, or pergamon.
For fun in the tub, consider the two-person jetted tub from SpaBerry, which can be installed inside or out. The ProSun Sunshower allows you to work on your tan while you shower.
While side access tubs are great for those who have trouble getting in and out of a standard tub, they often take quite a while to drain. The new model from Safety Tubs uses a pump to remove the water in under a minute.
Another innovative product was CleanCoat glass treatment from Sterling. The invisible coating causes water to bead up and run off glass shower doors and enclosures, reducing residue on the glass.
Sinks and Vanities
There were a number of unusual bathroom sinks on display, including these bronze and copper ones from Linkasink
This freestanding bathroom vanity in the Orrington Collection from Danze may look like a piece of custom furniture on the outside, but it’s loaded with functional storage space inside including removable, pullout drawers.
Fixtures and Controls
The ioDIGITAL controller from Moen allows complete control over the temperature and flow rate of your bath or shower. It comes with a remote control, and allows you to save multiple settings for a perfect bath experience for every member of the family.
The 90 Degree Collection of faucets from Moen employs their new 1255 Duralast cartridge for increased reliability.
Kohler demonstrated their Flipside Handshower with a head that rotates to provide four different sprays.
In the novelty category is the Toastie Tush toilet seat warmer which attaches to the lid, allowing it to lift up out of the way during use.
Other Tips from This Episode
Simple Solutions with Joe Truini:
Dishwasher Rack Repair
The plastic coating on dishwasher racks can wear off over time. To extend the life of your rack, snip off the end of the rusted tines with wire cutting pliers, then lightly sand the metal and apply dishwasher rack coating (available at appliance stores) to the bare ends. To speed the process, turn the rack upside down, and dip each tine in the bottle of coating. Allow it to dry at least 24 hours before using.
Best New Products with Jodi Marks:
Rust-Oleum Universal Spray Paint
As its name implies, Rust-Oleum Universal Spray Paint can be used on wood, plastic, metal, vinyl, concrete, and more. It comes in a range of colors, sprays from any angle, and has a comfort grip trigger that’s easy on your hands. Rust-Oleum Universal Spray Paint is available at The Home Depot.
