How to Maintain a Wood Deck

By: Danny Lipford

It’s important to regularly clean and refinish a wood deck to keep it looking good and prevent the wood from weathering or deteriorating over time. Here are some tips to get you started:

  1. Clean the deck using either a pressure washer or deck cleaner.
  2. Sand any splinters or rough spots and hammer in any nails that are protruding.
  3. Apply an exterior stain with a roller or sprayer. Back brush the wet stain so it penetrates deep into the wood.

Is there any oil that you would suggest on a newly stained desk that seems “dry” It gets a lot of sun and we would like to preserve it. We used a “solid stain” by Benj. Moore and it is not suggested to use their “clear coat” yet which would give it a nice luster.

Thanks for the info. I plan to check with the manufacture, but I would value other’s comments

    Hi Danny:

    Two questions:

    1. How do I know that it is time to wash/treat my cedar deck?
    2. Which cleaner would you recommend (I was told to avoid pressure washing as it hurts the grain of the wood..)? Thanks.

Thanks for the great video, Danny! I’ve also found using a deck cleaner to be a much preferable method to pressure washing. For applying the actual stain, here’s a great article on choosing a high-quality deck stain.
