ASK DANNY: How to flush out downspout debris

By: Danny Lipford

Joe Truini plumber's snake

Joe Truini uses a plumber’s snake to clean a downspout.

Anna has a question about how to unclog and clean downspouts on gutters.

Danny,
What if the downspout leads into the basement into a trap (not sure if that’s the word), and not outside? How can you flush it out with a garden hose?
Thank you. Please advise.
Anna Singh

Anna,
The garden hose should still allow you to flush out the debris. However, sometimes you may need to use a plumber’s snake to dislodge any of the impacted debris.
