‘Dungeon’ Laundry Room Gets Smooth New Floor

By: Thomas Boni

Roger Davis had a problem — well, more like a “dungeon.”

The laundry room in his 1920s rental home had a rough concrete floor, with cracks and chips in several places, as seen in this before photo:

The concrete floor in Roger Davis’ rental home had seen better days.

So Roger called the Today’s Homeowner Radio Show for advice.

“I asked a question to Danny on a previous radio show about the best paint to use for a concrete floor and how to prep it,” he says. “Received great advice and Danny asked for feedback on how it worked out.”

Here’s a photo of Roger’s laundry room after he put Danny’s plan into action:

After taking Danny’s advice, Roger Davis has a smooth new laundry room floor.

“The after shows results using a self-leveling concrete [and] then painting as he suggested,” he says. “With his help, we were able to turn a dungeon laundry room into a proper laundry room in our 1920s rental home.

“Thanks again for your help.”

What’s the easiest/least expensive way to raise a concrete floor (enclosed porch) to match the level of the adjoining pier & beam floor? There’s a 4 1/2″ to 5″ drop w/ the side on the outer door 1/2″ lower. I’d like to install 3/4″ solid wood flooring so it matches the rest of the house but cannot find a decent price w/o getting unknown # of 12″ pcs in the bundles. My house has long 3/4 x 2 1/4 boards w/o a subfloor but long pieces are so pricey. Would filling w/ concrete & painting it be cheaper than plywood & solid flooring? Tile? Vinyl? Ugh. My head’s spinning !
