An energy audit is basically a close look at your home and its systems to see where it can be more efficient. In some cases your local utility will perform one for free or a very nominal fee. If you take the chore on yourself, you might want to rent or purchase some tools to help you out.

An infrared camera or an infrared thermometer will help you determine where your home is loosing heat. The images produced by the cameras use color differences to graphically show the areas where the cold outside air is influencing your home.

The thermometers give you similar information. But instead of pictures, they give you temperature readings that tell you the same story.

Once you know where the heat is getting out, you’re better equipped to stop it and begin reducing your heating bills this winter.
