A very happy Independence Day Weekend to everyone! It was a very patriotic show this week….well, patriotic if you think that means Danny sharing a ton of 4th of July facts….which he DID! Some of his fun facts included:

    • The average age of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence was 45. The youngest was Thomas Lynch, Jr (27) of South Carolina. The oldest delegate was Benjamin Franklin (70) of Pennsylvania. The lead author of The Declaration, Thomas Jefferson, was 33.

    • President John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe all died on the Fourth. Adams and Jefferson (both signed the Declaration) died on the same day within hours of each other in 1826.
    • Barbecue is also big on Independence Day. Approximately 150 million hot dogs and 700 million pounds of chicken are consumed on this day.

In between barbecues and pool parties, you may have a few home improvement projects. If one of those projects includes hanging items on a hollow wall, you may want to consider a strap toggle. They’re easier to install than a standard toggle bolt, and one 1/4″ strap toggle can hold up to 80 pounds!

We had a chance to talk about the really awesome remodel Danny orchestrated for his Outdoor Living space! It included some amazing retractable screens from Phantom Screens, a beautiful new privacy fence built with treated lumber from Yellawood, and a new innovation in the fight against mosquitoes, NuTone’s Haven system.

An interesting email came in this week regarding a bathroom remodel that would completely remove a tub from a home and replace it with a walk-in shower. Would this sort of project negatively affect the future sell of a home? We went Straight to the Pros for this answer. Kathy S. Bass is one of the top Realtors in the Florida Panhandle. What do you think her professional advice is? Be sure to check out more on our Real Estate Pro, Kathy. And, don’t worry…she’ll be a returning guest, so if you have more questions, let me know!

We also spent some time talking about converting sliding closet doors to standards or bi-fold doors. It may be simpler than you think! Be sure to check out this video of Danny making a big change to a closet.

I hope you all have a great 4th of July. I’m planning on churning up some homemade vanilla ice cream topped with a generous helping of caramel!

Here’s a list of all the questions we tackled on this week’s show:

Hour 1

Charlotte in NY
I recently purchased a wall hanging wine rack. Upon its arrival I discovered it only had 2 eyelets for hanging. This rack is supposed to hold 15 bottles of wine. It’s obvious that I have to hang it on hooks but I am at a loss as to what type of hooks to use. Can you, please, advise?

Kevin in UK
Can I tile onto a terrazzo tile floor?

Rick in AZ
We are doing a kitchen remodel. When installing the new tile floor, do I tile the area below the dishwasher or does it just sit on the slab?

Larry in NM
On a recent TV episode of yours, you showed a lamp that also dispensed mosquito repellent. Who makes it and where is it sold?

Debbie in DE
Last year I purchased an outdoor table & chairs set. To help protect it, someone suggested I coat it with wax, so I used a car wax. When it dried, it was all white and I can’t get some of the white spots off the detailed work. I want to use another product, so how can I remove the dried wax?

Hour 2

Donna in KY
We are working on a bathroom remodel. We have a large full bath that we are making smaller to add a shower in the 1/2 bath. I would like to just have a shower in both baths. Would it be hard to sell the house in the future without a tub in one of the baths?

LeRoy in AL
What is the base material used in a good foundation for a sidewalk?

John in CA
I have a wooden deck that I have applied redwood stain. Is it a good idea to apply a varnish sealer or leave it?

Paul in AL
I purchased a home with cedar fencing in back. It’s turned gray. I pressure washed a couple of slats and would like to stain. What’s best, transparent stain or solid, and do I use any kind of primer or sealer?

Nick in AL
Is it ok to put new insulation over old insulation, or should I remove the old stuff first?

Rae in CA
I want to glue carpet to the bottom half of my sliding glass door. YES I DO! It has to hold up under the hot afternoon summer sun and winter cold. We seldom have freezing temps. I’ve already tried many glues including carpet tape, so far nothing has worked.

Joey in CO
I want to change the sliding closet doors into regular doors. They are 6 pocket doors that I would like to re-use. The closet is small and has drywall all around – do I need to add wood to the sides in order to add the hinged doors or buy a door frame?

Lou in LA
How do I get rid of gnats/drain flies? They’re driving me crazy!
