Simple Solutions

Rain Gutter Planters – Here’s how to make flower boxes out of plastic rain gutters. Cut the gutter into 3-foot sections, and drill 1/4-in.-dia. drainage holes through the bottom of the gutter. Slip on two mounting brackets and two end caps. Then screw the gutters to the railing of a porch or deck. Line the bottom of the gutter with landscaping fabric before adding soil and flowering plants.

Easy-Slide Countertop Appliances – Apply peel-and-stick felt pads onto the bottom of countertop appliances, so they’ll slide more easily. Try this for coffeemakers, blenders, food processors, rice steamers and other small appliances.

We took out an over the range microwave and installed a range hood. Now we need to do something about our backsplash but we can’t find the same tile. We’d like to possibly remove tile below the hood, but how do we do that without disturbing the tile on either side that extends under the cabinets? Ideas?

We are currently beginning a metal barn renovation to build a home business opportunity. The goal is to provide open interior space for special events, weddings, etc during inclement weather. Any suggestions on insulation, lighting, and plumbing would be greatly appreciated. I am mostly concerned about condensation. Kansas has all 4 seasons – sometimes all in one day!

Linda in OH
We have a knee wall in our upstairs bonus room. There’s a small door cut into the knee wall that leads to a storage area. However, during the winter, cold air blows in around the door. Is there a way to insulate the back of the door? What material should I use?

Hour 2

Glen in AL
Rain water is rotting the base of our wood house. It’s a 30×20 wood building; standing water rotted 2×4 around base. What can be done to prevent same once rotten wood is replaced?

Corina in CA
I am in the process of having my pool completely remodeled. I agreed to the Omaha Tan concrete color. It’s been a week since they poured the concrete and the color is coral and nowhere near the color I chose. What are my alternatives? Not happy at all.

Julie in TN
My husband & I are preparing to build a retirement hybrid timber frame home in NE Tennessee. We’re at the point we’re finalizing plans thru our architect & timber supplier & now we’re starting to look for windows, doors, etc, etc -you know the drill! However, we DO have a budget so we’re attempting to find high quality products we love but not necessarily the most expensive if there are other, maybe not as well known manufacturers to choose from. I’ve turned into a Google/Pinterest queen searching for things but I’m thinking there must be a more time efficient way to do this & so I wondering if you guys have any recommendations for me to help find a variety of choices & price ranges for all the things we’re going to need? Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated!

I have early-1980s Mylar wallcovering in my bathroom that I personally put up with heavy-duty gray wallpaper paste. It will NEVER come down. Can I paint or wallpaper over it? If so, how should I prep the Mylar surface?
