How to Place Faced Attic Insulation

Faced insulation always belongs face down.

Danny and Joe welcome callers’ questions each week on the Today‚Äôs Homeowner Radio Show.

Here’s a question from our Nov. 24 broadcast:

Steven from Tennessee says, “First of all, in the attic, I have 24-inch centers and there’s some insulation already there but the installer evidently didn’t know his business very well.

“[The insulation] is faced, [and] the facing is on top, which, my understanding is, it’s wrong.

“It’s old and only about 2 inches thick. Should I lay insulation directly on top of it or turn the existing over and then add unfaced?”
