Curb Appeal Makeover

By: Danny Lipford

Jonathan and Kate Light’s ranch-style home had been updated on the inside, but the exterior was still stuck in the ’70s, hidden by overgrown shrubs and accented with dated wrought iron.

To boost their home’s curb appeal, the Today’s Homeowner crew replaced the wrought iron with wood columns and railings, cleaned and repaired the concrete porch and brick steps, added professional landscaping, and gave the home some personality with bold, new shutters and a freshly painted front door.

Check out the Curb Appeal Makeover episode article for details.

    Hi, Jill!
What a nice thing you’re doing for your mother-in-law. 🙂
Painting boils down to personal preference and style, so we’re opening this question to the TodaysHomeowner.com community.
    Any ideas, y’all?

We are renovating my mother in law’s house to increase safety to move her back home from an assisted living facility. I just purchased 3 new bronze colored windows and just replaced the front doors. I can’t figure out what color to paint the shutters, doors, and trim. The house was built in the 60’s and has “old looking” brick of red/white/black/gray colors in it.
    Any ideas??

Makeover is gorgeous! Love the color of the shutters, but agree with the homeowner that they are a bit bright. Because of that, it’s difficult to appreciate all the other improvements because the eye is so drawn to that one aspect. I found myself in the same situation with that color on my shutters. Here’s what I did. I bought a small bottle of ager at Hobby Lobby for a few dollars. All you do is rub it right over your color to give your shutters a more subdued appearance. It doesn’t take much at all and “voila”, you have a beautiful teal blue in a flash! And no worries because it doesn’t wash off. Good luck!
