Power Sanders 101

Power Sanders Features

In addition to choosing the type of sander to fit your needs, also consider:

  • Sanding Speed: Variable-speed sanders are more versatile, allowing you to switch easily between rough sanding and finish work.
  • Random orbit sander with dust collector

  • Sandpaper: Some sanders use standard sheets of sandpaper cut to size while other sanders may require special disks, belts, or sleeves held on by adhesive or hook-and-loop fasteners. Make sure the sandpaper for the sander you purchase is readily available and not overly expensive.
  • Dust Collection: Some power sanders come equipped with dust bags, filter canisters, or shop vac attachments which are a big benefit in indoor workshops. Regardless, always wear a quality dust mask and hearing protection when using a power sander.
  • Comfort: Make sure the sander fits comfortably in your hand and is easy to use. Soft grips reduce vibration, and lighter weight sanders reduce fatigue.
  • Power: Handheld sanders are available as corded or cordless models, and range from light to heavy duty.

I have a speckled bone finish silestone countertop installed by Home Depot. I like it very much and want the same for a property I have in the Caribbean. Only that Home Depot say that they will not provide it since they can’t install it. I like the idea of a concrete instead and I learned that the capabiliy of concrete countertop is limitless. I have concluded that getting a 5” orbital sander and sanding disc all the way to 1500 grade will give a similar finish.
