Tips for Planting in Pots and Containers

By: Danny Lipford

When planting in pots or other containers:

  1. Place screen wire over the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot or container to prevent loss of soil.
  2. Use a prepared potting soil, rather than dirt from your yard, to ensure the soil is free from disease and insect pests.
  3. Plant your plants at the same depth they were originally planted at.
  4. Apply a time release fertilizer on top of the soil to keep plants healthy all season long. Watch this video to find out more.

I decided to plant a couple of hanging baskets this year in addition to buying a few from a local gardener. The pots from gardener are doing great but the ones I planted look like they are dying. I purchased potting soil and added fertilizer to them. When I water mine the water seems to stay on top vice draining. The ones from gardener drain through holes in bottom. My hanging baskets have drainage holes. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    Hi Michelle,
You can add several mulching materials on top of the soil in houseplants (regular garden mulch is too heavy) to help retain moisture. Read our article on How to Dress Up Your Houseplants with Mulch to find out more. Good luck with your project!
